Valspar Championship Preview

The PGA Tour rolls down the road to Palm Harbor, FL to take on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort for the Valspar Championship. One of my personal favorite trophies on tour with the swooping paint brush going to the lowest scorer of the weekend. LSU great Sam Burns was presented the trophy in 2021 and held on to it for 2022 and will look to defend his reign for a three-peat this weekend. It would be a huge achievement for Sam Burns to complete the three peat and would further establish himself as one of the elite American golfers. This week is a normal event on the PGA schedule with the winner taking home $1.45million of the $8.1million purse. There will be plenty of hungry golfers trying to prove themselves and qualify for the Master’s in a few weeks.

Field:

This week will not be a star studded event mostly due to the last two weeks being enhanced events with the higher purses to bring out all the big names. There will still be a few big names in the field this week such as Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Tommy Fleetwood and the return of Frenchman Victor Perez. Other notable golfers in the field that have been hot in the early season are Keegan Bradley, Adam Hadwin, Justin Suh and my dark horse of the week Brandon Wu. There is another golfer in the field this week that has a temporary member status that we will be watching, the internet sensation Akshay Bhatia. He took the golf world by storm winning on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2022 while having his girlfriend caddying for him. The 21 year old was on a upward trend in 2022 until an injury set him back as well with a string of bad golf. Akshay is one of the hungry golfers in this weeks field looking to take advantage of a great opportunity to re-establish himself as one of the up and coming youngsters.

The Course:

The Copperhead Course is a par 71 7,209 yard jewel of a course at the world renowned Innisbrook Golf Resort. Rated one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour slate, Copperhead has its share of trouble laid out with heavily guarded greens making accurate approach shots key to victory this week. Weather may play a factor with wind and rain in the forecast. Saturday will be the worst day with 90% chance of rain with 10-20 mph winds. Depending on how much rain and how fast it rains will determine if it will hurt or help these elite level golfers. Looking forward to another week of great golf!
