College Baseball on the East Coast:
Charlotte 49ers (+120) vs. Clemson Tigers (-150); total 12.5; 3:00pm ct
Both schools are starting off the season strong with winning records and Clemson being undefeated. The 49ers are coming into this game after a patient weekend at the plate as they walked a total of 50 times! The 49ers’ offense is also led by CUSA Player of the Week, Austin Knight who is batting .467 with 8 HRs. Projected starter for Charlotte is LHP Collin Kramer who started 1 game allowing 4 earned runs and 4 walks in only 2.1 innings pitched. The Clemson Tigers are aggressive on the base paths so any free passes will be taken advantage of. The Tigers stole 17 bases, which ranks them 3rd in the country after opening weekend. For me, this is a total fade of the Charlotte starting pitcher and I’m siding with the Tigers. Clemson has a very strong offense and any mistakes from CLT will be punishable.
Pick: Clemson (-150); $100 bet to win $66.67
West Virginia Mountaineers (+115) vs. #21 Maryland Terrapins (-140); total 13; 3:00pm ct
This will be Maryland’s home opener after winning the series against South Florida. The Mountaineers loss 2/3 games to Georgia Southern on opening weekend. There is not any concrete information on who the starting pitchers will be in this matchup, which is why I will take a cheap price on the explosive Maryland offense. WVU does have a solid squad but after they struggled on the road against Georgia Southern, a team that hosted a regional last year, I expect more of the same for the Mountaineer in College Park, MD.
Pick: Maryland (-140); $100 bet to win $71.43
#17 East Carolina Pirates (-140) vs. Campbell Camels (+110); total 12.5; 4:00pm ct
This should be one of the best matchups of the day with two high powered offenses. The Camels have a solid offense but its pitching has struggled to begin the season. The starters have posted a 6.33 ERA with 31 strikeouts and 17 walks. ECU will be starting RHP Charlie Hodges who missed all of last season due to injury. Campbell will be starting RHP Hunter Loyd who is a transfer from East Tennessee State making his Camels debut. ECU won both games these two played last season and each game went over 12.5 runs. With the unknowns on the mound today with these two powerful offenses I like this total to go over.
Pick: Over 12.5 runs (-115); $100 bet to win $86.96
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (-115) vs. Georgia Southern Eagles (-115); total 13.5 runs; 5:00pm ct
These two split games last season winning one each on their home fields. Both will be starting relievers in the SP role. Yellow Jackets will start freshman Luke Schmolke who came in for 1.1 innings and walked 3 batters but did not give up a single run. This will offer an opportunity for the high powered Georgia Southern offense to jump on the inexperienced freshman. 16 or more runs were scored in both matchups last year and I can see that trend continuing here. I’ll take the runs to go over in this game.
Pick: Over 13.5 runs (-120); $100 bet to win $83.33
