The Player’s Championship Preview

The PGA tour makes its next stop at one of golf’s Meccas, TPC Sawgrass the host of the next installment of the Player’s Championship. TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course has been the setting for many great Player’s Championships since 1982. The course has some of the most famous finishing holes in golf. The weather looks to be perfect for golf, except for Friday. Friday afternoon has a good chance of rain in the forecast. It’s Florida so things can change in an instance. The Player’s is another one of the elevated events for the 2023 PGA season, meaning higher purses. The Player’s has always been one of the highest purses but this year it has reached a new high of $25 million, with $4.5 million going to first place. These elevated events along with the announcement last week of the additional changes to the PGA events in 2024 with 8 events with no cut and only 70-80 players in the field are the PGA’s response to the challenges presented by LIV tour snatching up talent. This week should be another awesome week of high level of golf for patrons and viewers at home to enjoy.

Field:

The Player’s Championship annually has one of the most prestigious fields of the PGA tour season. Nicknamed the fifth major, the Player’s brings out the best in the world to compete for the large purse that comes with the Player’s Championship trophy. This year, especially with the record breaking purse, has again brought out the best of the best golfers. In this week’s field we will watch 43 of the top 50 golfers in the world competing for the Player’s Champion title. Rory McIlroy will be the most recent winner (2021) of the Player’s since last year’s winner Cam Smith who is now with LIV Golf.

The Course:

TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course is usually a top five on most golfer’s bucket lists of courses to play. Sawgrass is a beautiful monster of a golf course. It has perfect fairways and greens but hellacious bunkers, rough and water hazards that will test golfers at the highest level. The photos of the course conditions this week and early videos from the range sessions show the course is in immaculate condition. The course’s final three holes are some of the most famous finishing holes in golf. 16 is a par 5 scoring hole that will get the golfers ready for the teeth of Sawgrass, 17 is the world famous island green which has turned leaders into losers and losers into champs and finally 18 the famous dogleg left finishing hole which has water guarding the left side of the hole from tee to green has also swallowed dreams of glory on Sunday afternoons. Look for Sawgrass to show its teeth late Saturday and Sunday if the weather holds off on Friday as the course should be dried and tight during the weekend.
